Guimaraes is a city located in the Braga district of Portugal. The town center of the city was designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for its medieval monuments and post-medieval structures. The city has a great weather and people are quite friendly. My weekend stay in Guimaraes was truly memorable and I would definitely return to this wonderful old city. The place has several sightseeing locations, parks, and museums that make it an ideal destination for family holidays. Some of the best spots to visit in Guimaraes are as follows:
The medieval castle was built in the 10th century as a military fortification. It is the historic landmark of the city and my tourist guide narrated lots of old stories associated with the place. Some of the castle areas were built in the 13th century. The place also houses some interesting exhibits and offers a great view of the nearby town. You can tour the entire castle by paying just 2 Euros for a ticket.
Igreja E Convento De Sao Francisco
The church of Sao Francisco is one of the most beautiful cathedrals I have ever seen. The huge church is a historic building which was built in the 14th century and a fine illustration of medieval architecture at its best. The gilded altar, ornate carvings, and intricately designed ceilings are worth seeing. The church tour was an unforgettable experience and I would definitely recommend this place.
Montanha- Parque Da Penha
The park, located on Mount Penha is one of the busiest tourist destinations in the city. The place has lots of recreation facilities like cafes, mini golf course, tourist train, and restaurants. There are some well-preserved caves that relate to the archaeological history of the mountain. However, the highlight of the spot is the panoramic views you can enjoy from some of the natural viewpoints on the hilltop.
